Safety and Security Films and Their Approximate PSI Ratings

4 Mil (0.004 inches)

PSI Resistance: ~40-60 PSI

Best for: Basic shatter resistance in residential or commercial settings. Provides protection against accidental breakage and small impacts.

7 Mil (0.007 inches)

PSI Resistance: ~60-100 PSI

Best for: Enhanced protection against break-ins and medium-impact events. Often used in retail environments or residential spaces near high-traffic areas.

8 Mil (0.008 inches)

PSI Resistance: ~100-120 PSI

Best for: High-security needs, such as storefronts, schools, or homes in areas prone to severe weather. Adds significant resistance to forced entry attempts.

11 Mil (0.011 inches)

PSI Resistance: ~120-150 PSI

Best for: Advanced security, including protection against bomb blasts or heavy-impact scenarios. Common in government buildings or sensitive facilities.

14 Mil (0.014 inches)

PSI Resistance: ~150-200 PSI

Best for: Maximum protection in high-risk areas. Provides exceptional resistance against severe impacts, including natural disasters and deliberate attacks.

Additional Considerations

Attachment Systems: While the film itself provides strength, the PSI resistance also depends on whether an anchoring or edge retention system is used. These systems secure the film to the frame, preventing the glass from dislodging even under extreme pressure.

Testing Standards: The PSI ratings of security films are often verified using international standards like ASTM F1642 (blast resistance) or GSA TS01 (forced entry).

Environmental Factors: The film's performance may vary depending on the thickness of the glass it’s applied to and the direction of the impact force.

By choosing the appropriate thickness and ensuring professional installation, safety and security films provide reliable protection for a wide range of applications.
